Safe Exchange

What are supervised exchanges?

Supervised exchanges are court-ordered exchanges of children between custodial & non-custodial parents. Exchanges take place at public locations in the community convenient to both parents.  Parents do not see or hear each other while making the exchange of the child(ren)when necessary.

Why is this needed?

In some cases when parents are splitting up there has been violence or threats of violence. Total Security and Safety Inc. strives to increase safety for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, dating violence and/or stalking and to prevent violence from occurring during parent/child visits and child exchanges.

What security measures do you use?

Total Security and Safety Inc. has highly skilled, professional staff who are aware of the obvious and subtle ways that safety can be compromised. While maintaining a friendly atmosphere, the staff utilize state-of-the art monitoring equipment, panic buttons, etc. One facilitator is assigned  during each visit/exchange. Total Security and Safety Inc. has developed comprehensive security procedures with assistance from law enforcement, the court, parole and probation and the district attorney’s office.

Supervised Visitation

Supervised visitation allows parents in high conflict or high risk situations access to their children in a safe and supervised environment.

The noncustodial parent has access to the child only when supervised by another adult. Supervised visitation is used to protect children from potentially dangerous situations while allowing parental access and providing support for the parent child relationship.

The purpose of supervised visitation is to provide a safe and neutral environment for children to have a relationship with parents, and is often used in high conflict situations. Many courts take the position that it is better to make an error that protects the child as opposed to leaving a child at risk. There are many reasons supervised visitation may be needed:

Domestic violence.

Sexual abuse.
Drug abuse.
Mental illness.
Risk of international abduction.
General risk of child abduction.
Any other potentially dangerous family situations.

Currently, our program only provides observational supervision for visits or exchanges.  Our staff members do not provide any opinions or recommendations related to visitation.  The role of our supervisors is to be an objective party and is not to provide instruction, therapy, or evaluative feedback to clients or legal entities.  The Protection Agent will remain as unobtrusive as possible.

Visits can occur in a parents home, neutral parties home (grandparents or friend, or at a public location.

Documentation is provided to GAL and can be arranged for other involved parties attorneys to receive if needed.
